Breast cancer detection duo

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Penn.—According to a new health technology survey by the ECRI Institute, the combination of MRI and X-ray mammography may have a significant impact on the ability of oncologists to detect breast cancer in high-risk patients. Unfortunately, it also comes with the price of more false positives. The institute published its findings in its TARGET report.

Bedside testing collaboration

TORONTO—Axela Biosensors announced recently it would become a commercial partner of the University of Toronto’s BioOptics project, a collection of researchers developing devices to enable point-of-care (POC) medical testing and treatment. Axela will bring its Diffractive Optics Technology to the table, helping the researchers identify biomarkers and correlate them with diseases and conditions.

Emergis acquires eCHN

TORONTO—Leading healthcare IT company Emergis announced it acquired Unikoan, a company specializing in electronic health records (EHR) and perhaps best known for the electronic Child Health Network (eCHN), a pediatric EHR used in hospitals, clinics, and physician offices across Ontario. The acquisition will cost Emergis $15.3 million initially, with other financial contingencies based on Unikoan’s ongoing performance.

Redefining metabolic syndrome

BRUSSELS—In a recent issue of The Lancet, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) launched a new definition to identify children and adolescents at risk for metabolic syndrome, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The definition incorporates waist measurement (as a percentile rather than an absolute value) and the presence of two or more clinical features, such as elevated triglycerides, low HDL, high blood pressure, or increased plasma glucose.

Hypertension vaccine?

SCHLIEREN, Switzerland—At the recent European Meeting on Hypertension, researchers at Cytos Biotechnology presented the findings of a Phase II trial of their vaccine candidate in 72 patients with mild to moderate hypertension. They found the vaccine showed a particularly strong response in the ever-dangerous early morning hours, with blood pressure changes of -25/-13 mm Hg over placebo.

TORONTO—According to a new study published in Circulation, the use of N-terminal proB-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) results in patients arriving at hospital may have a significant impact on patient diagnosis and treatment, as well as on direct costs to the Canadian healthcare system. The multicenter study, led by cardiologist Dr. Gordon Moe of Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital, involved 500 patients presenting with shortness of breath.
