TORONTO—Axela Biosensors announced recently it would become a commercial partner of the University of Toronto’s BioOptics project, a collection of researchers developing devices to enable point-of-care (POC) medical testing and treatment. Axela will bring its Diffractive Optics Technology to the table, helping the researchers identify biomarkers and correlate them with diseases and conditions.
“When patient samples have to be sent out to a clinical lab for testing, the cost-per-test can be quite high and the turn-around time can be several days, which delays diagnosis,” says university professor Dr. Dwayne Miller. “The ability to perform bedside testing results in better, faster, and lower-cost healthcare, and that’s one of the advances we can offer, through our partnership with Axela, a company with a proven track record of successfully commercializing academic discoveries.”
