HSC spin-off and diabetes
TORONTO—The Hospital for Sick Children announced recently it had signed an exclusive license with a spin-off company, Afference Therapeutics, to accelerate the development and commercialization of research related to Type I and Type II diabetes. The research was led by SickKids researchers Dr. Hans Michael Dosch, the founder and CSO of Afference, and Dr. Michael Salter, who reported their efforts in Cell. The agreement will also see biotech specialist Lorne Meikle join the company as CEO.

"We set up Afference to rapidly develop an area where we have the capacity and skills to make a difference," Dosch says. "Lorne's leadership and his proven track record are tremendous assets. We are thinking big. We are excited about the opportunity for innovation in medicine, and for improving lives."

The agreement includes licensed patents, technology, and intellectual property related to neuropeptides and sensory nerves identified as part of the control circuitry of islet cell function.
